Just off the Press: Tributaries, Vol. 11

Cover of Tributaries, Issue 11.

The lastest issue of Tributaries, the Journal of the Alabama Folklife Association, is a delight to read.  It starts with Susan Thomas's article on the John Henry legend in Leeds, Al. Based on interviews done by AFA fieldworkers it proves that the old story still lives on among residents of the area. Thomas Kersen's article on intentional communities discusses attempts across the years and across Alabama to set up ideal places to live and work with other like-minded people. Jim Brown's article on John Mealing, an esteemed railroad caller or gandy dancer, contains numerous long-forgotten verses that Mealing rhythmically called out to crews of workers aligning railroad tracks by sheer muscle power and team effort. There are also obituaries for 4 noted folk figures who we lost this year as well as book reviews. It's free with AFA membership or may be purchased in the AFA bookstore.
