Slowtime
Recordings
An ongoing field recording project by Matt Downer, Slowtime
Recordings is dedicated to documenting and preserving the
songs and stories of the older generation of musicians in the
Sand Mountain region of Northeast Alabama. Two CDs are
available at this time:
Walking up Sand Mountain which features legendary Sand
Mountain fiddler Jess Moore (b. 8-24-1911). It includes great
fiddle tunes and Jess’ memories of early settlers, fiddlers’
conventions, first phonographs and life on the mountain in the
old days.
Gray Mule , Brown Mare featuring Sand Mountain Dobro
wizard Wayne Heard (b.6-27-25). A fine songwriter, three of
his original compositions appear here, as well as
instrumentals and stories of early influences and farming.

Fiddle and Well-Rosined Bow: A History of Old-Time Fiddling in
Alabama
By Joyce Cauthen, University of
Alabama Press.
Now in paperback, this book originally
published in 1989, relies on extensive archival research and
sixty interviews to tell the rich, full story of old-time
fiddling in Alabama from its settlement until WWII. It focuses
on the "modest masters of fiddle and bow" as well as
Alabama’s better-known "brag fiddlers," and gives
details about old-style square dances, Fourth of July
barbecues and fiddlers’ conventions. It is available from
the University of Alabama Press, www.uapress.ua.edu.

Sacred
Harp Singers: Lookout Mountain Convention 1968
Purchase
For $15
A selection of more than 30 songs from the 1960 edition of
the oblong tunebook The Original Sacred Harp (plus one song
from the White Book) and spoken portions recorded by James
"Bud" Oliver at the Lookout Mountain Convention in
August 1968.
Lookout Mountain 1968 is the first CD from Squirrel Hill
Recordings. A selection of more than 30 songs from the 1960
edition of the Original Sacred Harp (plus one song from the
White Book) and spoken portions recorded by James
"Bud" Oliver at the Lookout Mountain Sacred Harp
Singing Convention in August 1968 at New Bethel Church on
Lookout Mountain, Alabama, this recording captures the drive,
energy, passion and character of a style of Sacred Harp
singing that is disappearing and is treasured by many. Leaders
and singers include many beloved folks who are no longer among
us, as well as many who are.
The songs on this CD were recorded by Bud Oliver using a
stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder. While computer software has
been used to reduce as much noise from the recorder as
possible, the songs are otherwise presented with the
accompanying voices, page-turning, foot-stomping and other
sounds you would have heard had you been there in the church
that weekend.
Two songs (including "Idumea," a version of which
you can hear on this CD) from the Sacred Harp are featured on
the soundtrack to the motion picture "Cold
Mountain," sung by a group of singers that includes some
whose voices are captured on this recording 35 years earlier.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this CD will be
donated to the Lookout Mountain Sacred Harp Singing
Convention, which is held every fourth Sunday in August and
Saturday before. This convention, which welcomes all, singers
and listeners alike, celebrated its 100th anniversary in
August 2003.
